Customizable Privacy Coins Coming Soon

The Daily: Mimblewimble Coins Prepare to Launch, New Remittance Platform AnnouncedTwo crypto projects using Mimblewimble, a protocol designed to increase privacy and scalability, have announced the upcoming premieres of their new coins. The Mimblewimble concept was introduced back in 2016 and is now ready to be implemented at the beginning of 2019. Challenges during the development of the two cryptocurrencies have postponed both launches.

A startup called Beam is preparing to issue what has been described as the first Mimblewimble-based cryptocurrency on Jan. 3, after earlier reports that it would go live by the end of this month. Beam has been developed as a privacy-oriented crypto, but according to its creators it will be highly customizable, unlike other offerings in that niche.

“Lack of transaction confidentiality and poor scalability are some of the major issues that hinder crypto adoption,” Beam’s CEO Alexander Zaidelson told Distributed. The company will offer users the ability to set the privacy level for their transactions so that they can still report them to tax authorities, for example.

Another blockchain project based on the Mimblewimble protocol, Grin, was announced even earlier than Beam. However, its coin is now scheduled to launch on Jan. 15, 2019, to become the second Mimblewimble-based cryptocurrency.

Remittance Platform to Use Crypto Conversion

Atom Solutions, a Japan-based fintech company, is planning to launch its new remittance service on March 1, 2019. The platform uses a crypto wallet system that provides an alternative to traditional channels such as those based on the banking network Swift, which can be quite expensive and in some cases very slow.

The Daily: Mimblewimble Coins Prepare to Launch, New Remittance Platform Announced

Initially, the service will be available to users who want to send money between South Korea and the Philippines. However, the Japanese startup plans to expand the coverage to include at least 10 countries by the end of next year.

Atom Solutions promises low exchange rates and fees for fiat transfers thanks to using cryptocurrency conversion, but also addresses the issue with volatility that concerns crypto remittances by providing fast exchange through its wallet. The company has developed a system that quickly exchanges the fiat amount a user wants to send into cryptocurrency and then again into local fiat for the receiver.

Chinese Crypto Giants Focus on Core Businesses

The Daily: Mimblewimble Coins Prepare to Launch, New Remittance Platform AnnouncedTwo leading cryptocurrency companies with Chinese roots have announced plans to optimize their operations and focus on core business activities. The news comes at the end of a bearish year that saw digital asset markets losing billions of dollars in capitalization compared to the all-time highs of late 2017.

Bitmain Technology, the world’s leading producer of bitcoin mining equipment, has confirmed recent reports regarding planned job cuts that first spread on Chinese social media. In a statement quoted by the South China Morning Post, the Beijing-based company said it’s undergoing “some adjustment to our staff this year.” Emphasizing that it’s continuing to build a sustainable business, Bitmain denied rumors that it will lay off half of its employees. The company explained:

A part of that is having to really focus on things that are core to that mission and not things that are auxiliary. As we move into the new year, we will continue to double down on hiring the best talent from a diverse range of backgrounds.

In a similar announcement, the operator of Huobi, currently the third largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume, said it’s working to optimize staffing. The Chinese Huobi Group intends to do so by laying off its “worst-performing employees.” A spokesperson for the company noted however that the Singapore-based exchange is still hiring people for its core businesses and emerging markets.

The Daily: BTCP Bug Exploited by ‘Bad Actor’, Binance Lists New Pairs

,

The main story featured in today’s edition of The Daily is an official conformation from the Bitcoin Private team that someone has premined millions of BTCP. We also report about the latest currency pairs made available for trading on the Binance exchange.

Bitcoin Private Bug Exploited by ‘Bad Actor’

The Daily: BTCP Bug Exploited by ‘Bad Actor’, Binance Lists New PairsThe team behind Bitcoin Private has issued an official statement regarding a Coinmetrics report alleging that there was a covert premine of about 2 million BTCP at the creation of the token. The developers say they preformed an investigation after being made aware of the issue and determined that the findings are “mathematically accurate.” However, they claim that they have no connection to whoever was behind this exploit.

According to their internal audit, an open source developer became a BTCP developer to work on a specific issue in exchange for a bounty. This developer was given access to the project on Github in January, wrote his code, collected the reward, and hasn’t been heard of again. But one line of code was missing which enabled the exploit due to the nodes not properly verifying the falsified fork blocks.

And during the publicly announced fork-mine, a “bad actor” exploited this bug, the developers say. “As the code was open source, and the fork-mine was announced on Twitter, anyone with sufficient blockchain development knowledge could have exploited it. At this point, the only thing we can be sure of is that the BTCP Contribution Team did not know about the exploit until it was uncovered by Coin Metrics.”

The developers have put forward two possible plans for fixing the issue using hard forks to choose from, based on community feedback. In the meantime, they requested that all exchanges close deposits and withdrawals of BTCP to mitigate any damage that could be done. Users are also advised to proceed with caution when moving coins.

Binance Exchange Lists New Pairs

The Daily: BTCP Bug Exploited by ‘Bad Actor’, Binance Lists New PairsBinance, the popular international cryptocurrency exchange, has announced it is adding two new trading pairs (TRX/XRP and XZC/XRP), with Ripple’s XRP as the quote asset into the new Combined ALTS Trading Market (ALTS). The move naturally created a lot of excitement and buzz among Ripple’s cheerleaders on crypto social media.

Alongside this development, Binance also announced that the original ETH Trading Market (ETH) will be renamed into the ALTS Trading Market. This is done to reflect the fact that the trading venue now wants to support more trading pairs with different quote currencies.

The Daily: Argentina Meets 2019 With New BATMs, Russia Budgets Millions to Block Sites

,

In this edition of The Daily, we focus on the growing number of bitcoin ATMs in Argentina. Five new devices have been installed recently in Buenos Aires. We also look at a report that Russia’s telecom watchdog plans to spend millions of dollars to restrict access to banned websites and services such as Telegram. And in Greece, the suspected BTC-e operator Alexander Vinnik has been hospitalized after a month-long hunger strike in prison.

Five New Bitcoin ATMs Installed in Argentina’s Capital

The Daily: Argentina Meets 2019 With New BATMs, Russia Budgets Millions to Block SitesIn a bearish year, cryptocurrencies have enjoyed growing popularity in Argentina, a major South American economy that has been through some hard times in the past decades. For example, the trade between BTC and the Argentine peso on the P2P platform Localbitcoins has seen rising volumes throughout 2018. It reached a record high of almost 9.5 million peso (~$250,000) in the week of Dec. 8, according to market data compiled by Coindance.

The number of teller machines exchanging fiat with digital money has also increased significantly and Argentina is now ranking among the countries with the most crypto ATMs on the continent, the Cripto Noticias news outlet reported. Since September, a company called Athena Bitcoin has installed five new devices in shopping malls and supermarkets in Buenos Aires. That brings the total number of bitcoin ATMs in the country to seven. Two other teller machines were installed in the capital city in 2017.

New BATMs have been popping up across the region this year, with dozens of devices now operating in countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Mexico. 2018 has also seen the number of cryptocurrency teller machines around the world double to over 4,000 devices, as news.Bitcoin.com recently reported. Most of these ATMs support major cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH and LTC. The number of devices exchanging BCH has increased to almost 1,400.

Watchdog to Spend Millions on Blocking Online Services

The Daily: Argentina Meets 2019 With New BATMs, Russia Budgets Millions to Block SitesRoskomnadzor, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, is planning to acquire new technology to better combat banned websites and online platforms. The agency is ready to spend up to 20 billion rubles (over $500 million) on its implementation, BBC Russian Service has learned. Sources familiar with the project have been quoted by the media.

The report comes after a year of futile attempts to block Telegram, the popular messenger used by millions of crypto enthusiasts around the world. Its operator, founded by Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, is fighting a court decision to ban the service in Russia after it refused to hand over its encryption keys to the Federal Security Service, the country’s major security agency.

According to the BBC, Roskomnadzor is planning to use DPI (deep packet inspection) technology to improve its efforts to restrict access to Telegram and other banned platforms. Currently, Roskomnadzor is trying to curb traffic to these websites and services by blocking the IP addresses they use. This approach, however, has affected many other businesses that have nothing to do with the messaging app.

The Daily: Argentina Meets 2019 With New BATMs, Russia Budgets Millions to Block Sites

For example, this past spring the regulator blocked around 11 million IP addresses and 20 VPN and proxy services offering access to Telegram. Despite the offensive, the messenger is still accessible in Russia and has even increased its users to 3.4 million. According to Russian media, Roskomnadzor may also use the technology to block access to unregulated crypto platforms such as digital asset exchanges.

BTC-e Operator Alexander Vinnik Hospitalized in Prison

Alexander Vinnik, the alleged operator of the infamous BTC-e exchange, has been hospitalized, his lawyer Timofey Musatov told RIA Novosti. Musatov wasn’t able to reveal any more details, but in the last week of November Vinnik went on a hunger strike to protest against prison conditions and violations of his rights by the Greek judiciary.

The Daily: Argentina Meets 2019 With New BATMs, Russia Budgets Millions to Block SitesThe Russian IT specialist was arrested in Thessaloniki last summer on a warrant issued by the U.S. where he is accused of laundering between $4 and $9 billion through the now defunct crypto trading platform, including bitcoins stolen in the Mt Gox hack. His native Russia as well as France have also requested his extradition on charges of other crimes.

Last week, the Supreme Court of Greece ruled that Vinnik should be handed over to the French authorities. His defense team claims the extradition request filed by Paris has already expired. Vinnik himself told Russian journalists in the court room that he would continue his protest in case Greece decides to extradite him to France, Tass reported. He also said he had lost 9 kilograms of body weight since he started the hunger strike.

The Daily: Bitfinex Launches Tether Margin Trading, Zebpay Resumes BCH Transactions

,

In today’s edition of The Daily, we feature a number of recent developments from influential cryptocurrency exchanges including Bitfinex, Coinbase and Zebpay. We also cover the latest investment in the field by Paypal co-founder, Peter Thiel.

Bitfinex Launches Tether Margin Trading

The Daily: Bitfinex Launches Tether Margin Trading, Zebpay Resumes BCH TransactionsBitfinex, the exchange linked to the controversial Tether stablecoin, has introduced trading on margin for the USDT/USD pair. As strange as it may sound, offering leveraged trading on an instrument against the fiat base it is supposed to be matching can have some uses. And above all, it signals that the company is confidant about being able to maintain the 1:1 backing, even under new pressure from leveraged traders.

Bitfinex claims that adding margin trading on USDT/USD “will not only allow for more efficient price discovery, but in an important move for risk management, unlock the ability to hedge the exposure taken on stablecoins. Along with a dedicated lending market, USDT will be available as collateral for margin positions.”

The exchange further claims that while stablecoin margin trading is limited to USDT/USD for now, Bitfinex has plans to introduce margin trading for other stablecoin pairings, as part of its “commitment to providing a coin agnostic platform, when sufficient liquidity is reached.”

Coinbase Expands to Six European Markets

Coinbase has announced the rollout of its basic service to six additional European regions, encompassing about three and a half million people. This means that customers in Andorra, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Iceland, Isle of Man, and Lithuania will be able to use the website and mobile apps to buy and sell cryptocurrencies on the platform. And the company also hopes to make Coinbase Pro and Prime available in these regions over time.

“Cryptocurrencies are global by their very nature and we believe that they should exist without borders. To realize our mission means making crypto easily available to everyone, irrespective of their geographical location,” the team stated. “Next year we will continue expanding rapidly into new regions and adding assets to the Coinbase platform to meet customer demand.”

Zebpay Resumes Bitcoin Cash Transactions

The Daily: Bitfinex Launches Tether Margin Trading, Zebpay Resumes BCH TransactionsZebpay, formerly one of India’s largest exchanges which recently launched in Europe, has notified clients on Friday that it is now reenabling BCH deposits and withdrawals paused since the recent hard fork. The exchange will also restart BCH trading for supported fiat and crypto pairs in supported countries over a couple of days.

“We have closely monitored the BCH network, it is now stable and safe to resume BCH wallet transactions. You can perform Bitcoin Cash sends and receives from your Zebpay wallet,” the team explained. “We are providing support for the Bitcoin ABC network which is identified on the Zebpay platform as Bitcoin Cash with ticker BCH. ABC chain is leading in blocks, hash rate, total chain difficulty. In your Zebpay wallet, BCHABC will be called BCH, balances will be credited in 1:1 from fork time.”

Peter Thiel Invests in New Crypto Platform

San Francisco-based crypto investment platform Layer1 has announced the closing of $2.1 million in seed funding. The round was backed by notable investors such as Peter Thiel, Digital Currency Group, Jeffrey Tarrant, and others.

The company’s stated mode of operation is to take a long-term position in crypto assets it believes represent promising technologies with network effects, then deploy capital and resources in order to improve their fundamental value and support market adoption. It is said to have a heavy focus on programmable money and store-of-value applications.

Layer1 is led by co-founder, Alexander Liegl, and the team comes with experience from both big tech companies, such as Google and Facebook, and major investment funds such as Protégé Partners and Stanford Management.

“We believe that the crypto investment company of the future will look radically different to status quo, with a clear focus on an engineering-first and pro-activist investment approach,” said Liegl. “Cryptocurrencies, as open-source protocols, offer the unprecedented opportunity for companies like Layer1 to meaningfully add value. This is fundamentally different from the possibilities available in traditional asset classes.”

The Daily: Belgium Blacklists More Crypto Platforms, UAE Prepares ICO Regulations

,

In this edition of The Daily, Belgium’s financial regulator has expanded its list of fraudulent platforms offering cryptocurrency investments, while UAE has announced it’s working on new ICO regulations. We also look at the plans for a common digital currency in the Eurasian Economic Union and Abkhazia’s intentions to regulate its growing crypto mining industry.

Belgian Financial Watchdog Issues New Scam Warning

The Daily: Belgium Blacklists More Crypto Platforms, UAE Prepares ICO RegulationsBelgium’s Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has updated its list of companies suspected of operating fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes. The regulator has recently added 14 new websites offering crypto asset trading and other services, bringing the total of reported online scams to 113.

In a new message to investors, the financial watchdog noted that despite its earlier warnings, it continues to receive new complaints from consumers who have invested in digital assets through the blacklisted businesses. “Hence, the FSMA repeats its warning against the fraudsters behind those platforms who are using cryptocurrencies to swindle consumers,” the agency said.

The regulator emphasized that most of these platforms are based on the same principles. They usually claim to offer secure, easy and lucrative investment opportunities and expertise in the management of these investments. Clients are often told their funds are guaranteed and can be withdrawn at any time. In reality, however, they inevitably find themselves unable to recover the money.

UAE to Register and License Crypto Companies

The United Arab Emirates’ Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) is gearing up to introduce regulations for initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the first half of 2019. The decision to establish a dedicated regulatory framework for digital token sales is aimed at providing startups in UAE with the option to raise capital through crowdfunding, local news outlet The National reported.

According to the publication, the SCA has already recognized tokens issued in coin offerings as securities and will work with the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and Dubai Financial Market to develop trading platforms for ICOs next year. The watchdog’s chief executive, Obaid Al Zaabi, detailed:

We have signed agreements with law firms to come up with a sandbox and rule books for ICOs. The legal requirements will be completed by the end of the first half of 2019.

Al Zaabi added that after the introduction of the new regulations, UAE authorities will work with local exchanges on the implementation of relevant technologies and the development of the necessary infrastructure. He also stressed that the country will remain open to foreign investments in the industry, providing registration and licensing to crypto companies from around the world.

EAEU Plans to Issue Digital Coin by 2021

The Daily: Belgium Blacklists More Crypto Platforms, UAE Prepares ICO RegulationsThe Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is likely to introduce a common digital currency within the next two or three years, according to comments made by Russia’s deputy finance minister Alexei Moiseev. The coin will be similar to the European Currency Unit (ECU), which was used in the European Economic Community and later in the European Union between 1979 and 1998.

Moiseev added that not only EAEU members – Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia – but also the union’s partners have shown interest in adopting a common digital currency in their trade and economic relations. He also said that a group of experts is already working to develop the idea.

“Inevitably, we have to move in that direction because of the mounting difficulties with accounting. The number of organizations placed under sanctions is also growing. We must respond by creating reliable international payment systems that are not tied to the U.S. dollar,” the Russian official stated, as quoted by Tass.

Abkhazia Mulls Mining Regulations

The Daily: Belgium Blacklists More Crypto Platforms, UAE Prepares ICO RegulationsThe Republic of Abkhazia, a partially recognized entity in northwestern Georgia, is planning to adopt regulations for its growing cryptocurrency mining industry. Its president Raul Khajimba recently scheduled a meeting with members of the territory’s government to discuss the drafting of a law dedicated to placing the mining sector under supervision.

The announcement comes after the head of the state-run energy company Chernomorenergo, Aslan Basaria, complained that mining farms set up in abandoned Soviet factories put additional stress on the country’s electrical grid which is already loaded to full capacity. “If temperatures fall, there is a risk that electricity will not reach regular customers,” Basaria warned, quoted by regional media.

According to Eurasianet, Abkhazia is emerging as a crypto mining destination much like neighboring Georgia, the country it broke away from in the early 1990s. Both share a large hydropower complex located on the de facto border, which satisfies most of Abkhazia’s electricity needs. In recent years, Georgia has become a regional leader in crypto mining as it offers miners some of the lowest operating costs in the world.

The Daily: Bitcoin Posts Record Volume, Ledger Plans Major Update

,

The news is bullish in this edition of the The Daily, mirroring the mood of the crypto markets. We’ll start by delving into BTC’s record-breaking day for trading volume and then examine a couple of stories that suggest 2019 is poised to get off to a very positive start.

BTC Posts Record Daily Volume

The Daily: Bitcoin Posts Record Volume, Ledger Plans Major UpdateIt’s not just the price of bitcoin – both cash and core – that’s been shooting up this week – volume has followed suit. In fact, the real headline about this week’s price rally isn’t BCH doing a 3x or BTC passing and then holding the $4,000 mark. Rather, it’s the significant increase in trading volume that occurred on Dec 20, which some traders have taken as evidence of a full reversal. That’s right, the bottom may finally be in – though no one’s willing to publicly make that call just yet it seems.

Crypto Quantamental noted that the $2.26 billion of BTC traded on Thursday, Nov. 20 was the highest recorded in the cryptocurrency’s history. Compared to previous days when BTC was trading in the $3,500-$4,500 bracket, yesterday’s BTC volume was greater by a factor of 3-4x. Regardless of which way BTC moves next, it’s fair to say that interest in the crypto market has been fully restored. BCH has also been on a tear, as this graphic by The Tie shows, comparing the cryptocurrency’s market cap to that of BSV and LTC this week.

The Daily: Bitcoin Posts Record Volume, Ledger Plans Major Update

Looking back at Twitter activity since the start of the month, the sentiment analysis platform noted that “while indicative tweet volume (# of tweets that contribute to sentiment score) peaked for both BCH and BSV on Dec. 7, BSV has basically been completely flat as the amount of twitter conversation around BCH has trended upwards. It’s safe to assume BCH’s astonishing growth over the past three days may have contributed to that interest.

The Daily: Bitcoin Posts Record Volume, Ledger Plans Major Update

Ledger Schedules Major Firmware Update

French hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has planned its biggest upgrade yet to its Nano S devices. Version 1.5, scheduled for release in early January, will feature new hashes, signatures and derivation schemes, enabling the wallet to support new cryptocurrencies. These updates will be accompanied by a slew of security improvements including:

  • Full redesign of the arithmetic architecture
  • Improved MCU genuine check (firmware attestation)
  • PIN code implementation improved for better resistance to hardware attacks
  • Hardening of the PIN code against various hardware and side channel attacks

In the arms race hardware manufacturers are engaged in, the biggest winners are consumers, who now have a wide range of increasingly robust hardware wallets to choose from.

Virtual Land Goes up in Smoke

The Daily: Bitcoin Posts Record Volume, Ledger Plans Major Update
Decentraland

47 million mana tokens have now been burnt in Decentraland’s second land auction which ends over the weekend. This equates to around $2.5 million of tokens destroyed, in return for purchasing plots of land in the virtual world. With the price of each parcel dropping ever closer to its lowest possible price of 1,000 mana over the weekend, a bidding frenzy is suspected. Just 6,000 of the 9,300 parcels available a week ago are left, with nonfungible.com recording an average price per 10x10m parcel of $850.

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging Service

Learn and Earn

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging ServiceCoinbase has announced a new initiative meant to incentive people to learn more about cryptocurrencies. The Coinbase Earn educational platform will reward users with tokens for completing various tasks such as watching videos and taking quizzes on crypto-related content.

The service has launched in invite-only mode with just a single asset for now, but Coinbase promises that over time it will add more options. Users who received an invite by email can already go to the ZRX page to earn small amounts of cryptocurrency. Anyone else can view the educational content on the page for free, as well as sign up to a waiting list to be notified as more educational tasks are available.

“We think Coinbase Earn could help open up blockchain access to a new group of users: people who are curious about digital assets, but who’d like to try them out for free just like a normal web or mobile app. By serving that need, we hope to make blockchain more accessible in the process,” the team commented. The exchange also revealed that for the first set of tasks, funding is unsurprisingly coming from the 0x external development pool.

Okex Messenger

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging ServiceOkex, the Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange supporting fiat currencies such as Vietnamese Dong and Chinese Yuan, has announced it’s launched an instant messaging service. Developed for its over-the-counter trading (OTC) platform, the new feature allows users to establish direct communications between buyers and sellers.

The instant messaging service allows traders to send and receive messages in real-time with their counter-party on Okex’s website and mobile applications. The apps are available for both the iOS and Android operating systems, and the developers say that by enabling push notifications, traders will be alerted immediately through their mobile devices once they receive any updates.

Coinex Updates BSV Ticker

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging ServiceHong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinex has changed its Bitcoin SV ticker from “BCHSV” to “BSV”, announcing that from now on “BCHSV” will no longer represent the Bitcoin SV token on the platform. Founded in December 2017, the company counts mining giant Bitmain among its investors.

With this move, the exchange reaffirms that it expects users to understand that BSV is no longer related to Bitcoin Cash (BCH) in any way following the recent hard fork. Coinex was among the very first exchanges that opened withdrawals for both BCH and BSV following the fork, providing an easy way for holders to split the two cryptocurrencies.

ZB.com Partners Gaming Project

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging ServiceHong Kong-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange ZB.com has recently announced an expansion into the European Union with the launch of the Malta-regulated ZBX.com. To make a concerted effort to attract new Western users, the company has announced it is investing into select crypto projects, the first being Clovr.

Founded by a team of executives and developers with experience from King.com, Uber and Y Combinator, Clovr has developed an esports token to tap the market of 3.5 million real-money players engaged with licensed online casinos.

“We believe there is a large upside for projects with access to sizeable daily active user bases,” noted ZB.com co-founder Jimmy Zhao. “User adoption is crucial to the long-term value creation of cryptocurrencies. We think CLOVR could be the most used crypto of 2019 since their tokens can be purchased by an existing large and engaged esports and iGaming online user base.”

Ledger Adopts Crypto.com Pay

The Daily: Coinbase to Pay Users for Learning, Okex Launches Instant Messaging ServiceLedger, the Paris-headquartered hardware wallet manufacturer, has announced the signing of a deal to adopt a new cryptocurrency payment solution, Crypto.com Pay. Once the service is implemented onto Ledger’s online store, customers will have the option to purchase products at checkout by opening the Crypto.com wallet and card app, scanning a QR code, and selecting the desired cryptocurrency to be spent.

Éric Larchevêque, CEO of Ledger, said: “Our customers understand the everyday utility of cryptocurrency, and as a leading cryptocurrency asset hardware wallet provider, it is a natural step for us to provide a cryptocurrency payment option. We support what Crypto.com is doing to lead the industry forward with its vision of cryptocurrency in every wallet. We feel this payment option is just what our customers are seeking.”
